Track by Track is where I pick one record and tell you the story behind it. This one's mine. Morning was one of the first songs I finished for Dust and Data. The radio edit came out in December 2025.
It started in my Notes app
Morning began as a few lines in the Notes app on my iPhone. Half a lyric idea, half a love note. I screenshotted it and sent it to my partner, and there it sat.
Dust and Data
When I started Dust and Data in 2025, the whole idea was to pull together fragments I'd collected over the years. Snippets of lyrics and beats that never got finished. That's the dust: things that had been sitting there gathering it.
The data is how we make music now. When I started out, it meant wires everywhere and bits of kit plugged into each other, with really limited hardware. Today you've got a full recording studio on a laptop you can carry around all day. So the question became simple. How do I use this technology, the plugins and virtual synths, to finally finish the stuff that never got finished?
Morning was one of the first to make it. I took that note from my phone and built it out into a full song, writing the melody and building the music around it. I gave it a feel-good reggae vibe and played with a few versions. It wasn't the first demo, but it was the first one I was really happy with and happy to put out.
A love song about nothing much
It's a simple love song about the smallest kind gestures. I've always been a coffee drinker. She drinks tea. That's fine, because I can make both cups. It's right there in the first line:
I get up and make both cups
Coffee for me, tea for you
And the chorus says the rest:
I drink coffee, you drink tea
Different taste, same melody
No fireworks, no grand design
Just your hand resting close to mine
No grand gestures. Just two cups and the start of a day.
Why it matters
It's the little things that matter in life. I believe that. The big moments get the photos. But most of life is made of mornings like this one, and if you can find the good in those, you're doing all right. The bridge puts it better than I can here:
Love's not loud, it's quiet proof
The gentle things that get us through
And the song ends where the morning starts:
I get up and make both cups
And bring them back to bed
The other version
There's also a Redemption Mix, which came out in March 2026. It's more of a house track, built around a tiny snippet of the original vocal. It's not quite a different song, but it's definitely not the same one either. This post is about the radio edit, the original.
If you like it, give Dust and Data a follow on Spotify. It really helps.
So, tea or coffee? And who makes it in your house?
