Cookies
Which cookies this site uses, who sets them, and how to control them.

What cookies are
Sadly not the chocolate chip kind. These cookies are tiny text files a website leaves on your phone or computer. They help a site remember things, like keeping you logged in or keeping the spam out. Some sites use similar tricks, like your browser's local storage. I treat those the same as cookies here. No crumbs, I promise.
How this site uses them
The site itself only uses essential cookies, the ones it needs to work and stay secure.
Some pages include content from other services, such as Spotify players, YouTube videos and my newsletter signup form. Those services may set their own cookies when their content loads or when you use it.
There are no analytics or advertising cookies. If I add analytics, I’ll update this page first and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
The cookies, by type
| Type | Set by | What they do | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | WordPress (this site) | Keep me logged in when I edit the site. If you leave a comment and tick the box, they remember your name and email for next time. | Only when logging in, or when you tick the box on a comment |
| Essential | Cloudflare | Protect the site from bots and attacks, and help it load quickly. | When you visit, if Cloudflare’s protection is on |
| Embedded content | Spotify | Play embedded tracks and playlists, remember your preferences, and help Spotify see how its player is used. | When a Spotify player loads or you press play |
| Embedded content | YouTube (Google) | Play embedded videos, count views, remember your preferences, and may be used by Google for advertising. | When a YouTube video loads or you press play |
| Newsletter form | Kit | Make the signup form work and help prevent spam signups. | When the signup form loads or you subscribe |
I haven’t listed every cookie by name. These services set them, and the names may change. For their current lists, see Cloudflare’s cookies page, Spotify’s cookie policy, Google’s cookie policy and Kit’s privacy policy.
How to control cookies
You can block or delete cookies in your browser’s settings. In Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge, look under Settings, then Privacy. Most browsers also let you block third-party cookies only, which stops the embedded services setting theirs.
Blocking essential cookies may stop parts of the site working, such as comments. Blocking third-party cookies may stop the Spotify and YouTube players from working.
The ICO has a simple guide to cookies at ico.org.uk.
