Today's track is one you won't find on Spotify: Lovely Day (DJ Eleven Remix Do-Over). It's one of those records that lives in my DJ bag, and it never lets me down.
Because you can't stream it, here are the two records that make it happen.
The song
Bill Withers, Lovely Day, from his 1977 album Menagerie. That voice, that long held note, and a feeling that lifts any room the second it starts.
The beat
Biz Markie, Make the Music with Your Mouth, Biz. It came out in 1986 on Prism Records and was produced by Marley Marl. DJ Eleven takes that classic drum break and lays Bill Withers right over the top of it, and the two fit together like they were always meant to.
Where I play it
This one gets a lot of plays in my afternoon festival sets. It works as a warm-up, and it works just as well to close.
I did a closing set recently where I built up through all sorts of genres, right into some heavy drum and bass. Then I dropped this to end the night. After all that energy, it brought everyone back down together with a smile on their face.
Your turn
Have a listen to the two originals, then have a think: which other songs would you want to hear at the end of a big night?
