Episode 150: The Thing That’s Got Us Here

Episode 150, and what got us here was turning up every week, starting with two cheap mics plugged into a dictaphone.

For episode 150 I actually changed into a proper shirt before getting on camera, instead of the usual T-shirt and hoodie. I'd thought about doing a list of 150 things, or a 150-minute episode. Neither of us has the attention span for two and a half hours. So we talked about what got us here, and for me that's consistency. Nothing more than that.

There's a question I ask a lot from stage, so I asked Nigel. Did you learn to drive in your dream car? Hardly anyone does. But once you can drive, you can drive pretty much anything. Our first four episodes were two cheap microphones plugged into a dictaphone. No name, no theme tune. We just started and sorted the rest out as we went.

Nigel brought in Zig Ziglar. Seven apples in one day won't keep the dentist away, one a day probably will. I owned up that after 75 Hard I've had nearly 75 days off, though I'm still feeling the benefit. And the buzz from a big three-day seminar fades fast if you don't act on it. I reckon some people end up further back than where they started.

We recorded this in the middle of the petrol panic. The queue for the garage round the corner from me was blocking the traffic lights at the end of my street. The garages had put on a £30 maximum spend. Someone I was talking to the night before said it should be a £30 minimum, so nobody would bother topping up a nearly full tank. Nigel told me we were getting into government issues and changed the subject.

Then content. Nigel has two events this week, one from a client who saw him 12 years ago and one from someone who's never heard him speak. He pays more attention to who shares his posts than who likes them. I told the story of ending up on stage in Denver in 2019, showing the main speaker orders that had come in while I was switched off. Nigel also told me he'd lost it with his local doctor a couple of weeks before. That's next week.

What stuck

  • You don't learn to drive in your dream car. Start with what you've got so you're ready when the right thing turns up.
  • One apple a day beats seven in one go.
  • After a big seminar, do something with it quickly or the high turns into beating yourself up.
  • Make content your followers will want their friends to see. Shares tell you more than likes.

The problem is if you don't do consistent action, you get inconsistent results.
