In June 2012 I started running. Despite thinking I was reasonably fit at the time It was hard.
I wanted to quit lots of times, but I persevered.
The rest is history. Since June 2012, I have completed multiple half-marathons, marathons, ultra-marathons and even a triathlon.
This time last year I was sat wondering ‘what next?’
Although I had plans to run a number of races in 2016, also wanted to try something new. I wanted to increase my physical strength and develop more functional fitness skills.
I started a new training programme and it was a LOT harder than I expected, but I quickly made progress and was starting to see results (including an improvement in my running).
Then it happened… an accident.
I had a fall on Good Friday in March 2016 and tore the ligaments from my right ankle. This resulted in almost 2 months non-weight bearing after narrowly avoiding surgery.
Not only was running out of the question, I suddenly had to rebuild the muscles in my leg in order to be able to walk again.
2016 was a frustrating year. Even when I got back in the gym I had to modify almost everything, taking time to be gentle and kind to myself and be open to asking for and accepting help.
Recovery has been, and continues to be, a slow journey.
But, I am determined not only to get back to where I was, but to get fitter and stronger than ever.
Today I went for a short run. Only my second since the injury. It was harder than I expected, but easier than the first run just a few days ago.
I am slower and can’t run far. It reminds me of when I first started to run in 2012.
The important thing I need to remind myself is how quickly I made progress then – going from the couch to my first marathon in under a year – and how EVERYTHING is possible with commitment, persistence and a little patience.
I am back in the gym too and grateful for the support I’ve had from the team at Trimnasium Performance Gym in Cheltenham (UK).
I am working on my posture, my strength, my endurance… it’s time to give myself an upgrade!
