Brazil Without Beer (and Without Cachaça Too)

Mar 13, 2012 | Life

Heading back to Brazil in 2012, I skipped the caipirinhas made with cachaça, lime and sugar, and faced my first ever sober long haul flight.

So today I am heading back to Brazil, a place I first visited in 2011. I blogged about Brazil back on day 6 of my year without beer as part of my list of 10 Lagers I Won’t Be Drinking in 2012. I have to say that most days in Brazil when I visited in 2011 involved a beer or two (or three…) and if I was lucky then probably a cheeky caipirinha too! Caipirinha is the local cocktail, made with Cachaça (a local spirit, a bit like rum), sugar and lime and it is absolutely delicious. I also tried some variations of this with freshly juiced local fruits instead of the lime, so I am hoping this time I can get the fresh juices without the booze or the added sugar.

Tonight is also going to be my first ever sober long haul flight. Normally on long haul flights I have a beer or two at the airport, a red wine or two when I get on the plane and then after the meal I sleep. I’m not great at sleeping on planes, but have always found that the booze makes me a little drowsy and hence I find it easier to dose off. I say I find it easier, but I also said this will be my first long haul flight without booze so I am not entirely sure what I am comparing it to! Given that the flight is over 11 hours and I don’t take off until 21:30 I suspect I will be tired enough to sleep anyway.

Year Without Beer

I am giving up all alcohol throughout 2012 (all 366 days) to  raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Cancer Research UK.
