In Memory of Adam Vaughan

Mar 4, 2013 | Life

Ten years after my cousin's son died from Cystic Fibrosis aged just 18, I reflected on his cheeky spirit and how his memory drives my 2013 self powered miles challenge.

A family photo of a young boy

Ten years ago today, on 4 March 2003 the world lost a cheeky, inspirational young man called Adam Vaughan. My cousin’s son Adam was just 18 years old when he lost his lifelong battle with Cystic Fibrosis, the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited disease. Despite spending large parts of his short life in hospital Adam never once complained, not even of a headache.

I am doing my 2013 miles in 2013 challenge in memory of Adam to try and raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and awareness about this disease. Cystic Fibrosis affects over 9,000 youngsters in the UK and there is presently no cure. Approximately 25% of children affected by Cystic Fibrosis pass away before they become adults and although the life expectancy of Cystic Fibrosis patients continues to increase the average life expectancy is still only 30 to 40 years.

2013 Miles in 2013 – The rules

The rules for my 2013 miles in 2013 challenge are quite simple:

  1. All miles must be completely self powered (no motors, sails, etc)
  2. I must be able to evidence all miles, either via GPS or with a picture of any static gym equipment

To complete my 2013 miles I will be running, cycling, rowing and who knows, I might even try a few other self powered methods along the way.

An Example or a Warning

For years the picture I kept of my dad was a hospital bed. What I found when I looked again, and why every life is an example or a warning.
