Day 16: Grow

Dec 16, 2016 | Life

Day 16 of my 2016 Motivational Advent Calendar: the book you don't want to open is often the one with the wisdom you need.

A word, a book and a few minutes on camera, from my 2016 advent calendar. First published December 2016.

Grow

"Be patient and curious instead of instantly judgemental" (Jon Ronson, So You've Been Publicly Shamed)

If you want to grow, you have to be open-minded.

I know I've touched on this before, but one of the most important things is not to be judgemental. Don't judge other people and don't judge yourself. If you do any kind of judging at all, the judgement should be: what's the lesson in this? What can I learn from this, or from this person? Either in terms of things I like or things I don't like, things I want to take on or things I want to reject.

But don't make instant judgements, because so often the person who will give you your best lesson is the one you want to turn away from. So often the book you don't want to open is the one that's got the wisdom you need.

Growth comes from being open-minded. Accepting change, welcoming it, and looking for the lesson.

The book: So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson.

Next time you want to turn away from someone or something, ask what the lesson is instead.
